Winner of Indian heats of SDC’s International Design Competition (IDC) 2015

  • SDC as the leading educational charity is dedicated to advancing the science of colour worldwide. SDC encourages the creative use of colour in fashion and textile designs. It is a committed supporter of up-coming young designers. This commitment is well established as a competition, now in its 13th year which seeks students to demonstrate ‘the creative, imaginative and original use of colour in either fashion or textiles’. Applicants from universities and colleges across the globe contest to win the competition, and each participating countries selects a finalist who will attend the Grand Final in London in November 2015.

    The winner of the Grand Final will receive the prestigious Veronica Bell Trophy and a cash prize of £1,000. The winner and finalists also benefit from significant international profile and press.

    Tasneem Patrawala is the winner of the Indian Heats for IDC 2015. She is in her second year of B Tech (HND) at the B. D. Somani Institute of Art and Fashion Technology, Mumbai.

    The winning piece is titled ‘Jackbag’ by Tasneem Patrawala. She will represent India in the finals of International Design Competition -2015. The Grand Final will be held at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London on 23rd November 2015.

    Tasneem Patrawala says, “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she’ll conquer the world – Marliyn Monroe”. This quote by Marilyn Monroe holds a new meaning for me now; SDC has given me the right pair of shoes to showcase my creativity and extending me the opportunity to represent my college and country at an International event. Although the happiness and excitement is difficult to express in words, I feel humbled to thankful to SDC. I remember the time and nights spent to explore, research and develop and derive the concept. In all these stages my teachers and batch mates have been my core supporters and well-wishers. Now, I am only looking forward to get The Veronica Bell home.”

    The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Buy Less Choose Well’, the judges evaluated the design boards on Friday, 04th September 2015 at Hotel Hilton International, Andheri, Mumbai.
    The competition attracted a great response with 48 entries from 17 colleges across India namely from Delhi, Baroda, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata and Jaipur

    The competition entries were judged by a panel of esteemed design experts comprising Ms. Purvi Joshi (Vice President – Sourcing & International Business development, Being Human Clothing, Mandhana Industries Ltd, Well known Designer Ms. Nivedita Saboo- Fashion Director for Mr. India-World 2015 and Prof. Priti Doshi – Coordinator for the Fashion Design specialization, Indian School of Design & Innovation (ISDI), Mumbai .

    Prof. Doshi was highly impressed by the presentations. She narrated, “I was truly impressed with the work, wonderful approach that SDC has!”

    Ms. Nivedita Saboo expressed, “A lovely initiative by SDC, to educate the design Industry and students about colour and its nuances. The work of the student was innovative and well presented. Judging this wonderful SDC design competition was refreshing”.

    The First Runner up is Ms. Sheela Suthar from Rachana Sansad School of Fashion & Textile Design. The second Runner up is Ms Manvi Pande from NIFT, Delhi. “Their concept and the presentation were very good”, said Judges.

    We would like to thank the colleges and the students for their participation in the competition. Special thanks to mentors/ faculty who guided the students in a precise way.
