You are warmly invited to attend this special commemorative event celebrating 75 years of the SDCANZ Victorian Section and 81st AGM
In August 1939 just one month before the outbreak of WW2 the Society Of Dyers and Colourists of Australasia (Victorian Branch) produced its first journal. It was only 5 years earlier that a group of Melbourne dyers met at the Masonic Hall in Collins Street where great interest was shown in the formation of a Society.
From its inception the Society catered for the practical dyer similar in many ways to the “Foreman Dyers Guild” of England and in 1936 contact was made with the Society of Dyers and Colourists in the Mother Country to discuss affiliation. In 1938 this proposal was ratified by the UK Council and this co-operation continues to this day. The names of the committee members are part of our textile history and names such as Hirst, Fergusson and E.I. Noble are still remembered today.
The SDCANZ will hold a special function at the Swiss Club which is well know to many members as this venue was used for over 15 years for the monthly Thursday evening meeting followed by a meal and huge quantities of beer and wine.
We have also reprinted this first edition complete with 50 pages of technical papers, photo of the Annual Dinner held as The Palms on the 14/07/1939 including several poems about the life of a dyer.
We invite all past and present members of the SDCANZ to attend the dinner and together we can revive some of the spirit of the early founders and recall their names once more. Partners are also welcomed. Life Members will be guests of the SDCANZ.
The 81st AGM will commence at 6.30pm followed by dinner at 7pm at the Swiss Club Restaurant, 2nd Floor, 89 Flinders Lane, Melbourne. Cost of the buffet dinner will be $25 per person subsidized by the SDCANZ; drinks will be charged for. You must book for this function and to reserve your free reprint of the first journal by either contacting Henry Orlinski or Frank Colaci .
