SDC London Region – Speed Mentoring Session: Careers in Fashion, Textiles & Colour

  • Join us for this interactive session, speaking with industry professionals, hear about their career highs & lows, key successes and impart learnings they wish they knew when graduating and starting their career in fashion, textiles, print, trends and colour. Furthermore participants will benefit from the speakers real life experience of working in large international organisations down to running their own business – helping to unpack the business side of creative industries. They will also give advice on how to get work experience, funding, grants, and how to market yourself, your brand and your portfolio.

    This event is essential if you are an undergraduate, graduate or young professional looking for inspiration as to the next step in your career path.

    The event will be chaired by Jane Duncan, London region member and co-founder of JDDesignLondon.

    Our speed mentoring evening is based on the speed-dating concept, it’s a great way to engage with professionals in a fun, quick-fire manner and to foster new professional relationships.

    The format for the evening is:

    Arrival & Registration

    6:00-6:30pm: Introduction to the SDC and welcoming our mentors

    6:30-7:30pm: Speed Mentoring – we advise that you come prepared with questions to make the most of your time. Use this as a chance to get advice, network and learn from the industry that we all share.

    7:30pm-8:00pm: Close, thanks and networking

    To ensure you are able to speak with your preferred mentor, when registering you will be asked to select your top 3 mentors you would like to book a session with. You will have approximately 10 minutes with your chosen mentor to pose questions directly to them and hear their experience.  (Due to popular demand you may be placed within small groups to speak with your mentor).   • Alex Brownless
    Alex is the co-founder of Arts Thread, the world’s leading digital platform for emerging artists & designers and a launchpad for the next generation of creative talent.     Alex graduated with a BA Hons in Textile Design in the early 1990’s and has had a rather diverse career, designing for such companies as Banana Republic, Gap, M&S etc. He headed up the successful rave label NASA, was the E- Business Manager of WGSN, has consulted for fashion/textile manufacturers in China, India, Turkey & Puerto Rico supplying many retailers & brands worldwide. He also headed up the International fashion division at the world’s largest creative recruitment consultancy Aquent. He is currently consulting for Ascential owners of WGSN, Cannes Lions, EMAP, Coloro and many more.

    Jacqueline Kennedy, Assistant Colourist, M&S
    Jacqueline works across the Womenswear and Lingerie departments at M&S. She has worked in the fashion industry as a Colourist for over eight years, firstly for a small trend forecasting studio in South London, where she learned the process of colour dyeing and creating inspiring and commercial palettes, and more recently for Cath Kidston, before her current role at M&S which she started in July 2017. She works in a small team, researching colour trends and building up seasonal colour strategy for both Womenswear and Lingerie.   
    Jacqueline will share her experience working within M&S with colour, materials and design and how she takes colour from concept to the consumer within M&S’s fashion products.

    Fiona White
    Fiona graduated from NCAD Dublin in 2016 with a degree in Textile Surface Design. The same year she also represented Ireland in the SDC International Design Competition in Shanghai, China. Upon finishing university, Fiona worked for Ireland’s largest retailer Dunnes Stores as a textile designer for homewares. In 2018, she relocated to London to work in one of the UK’s leading print studios as a textile designer for fashion.

    Justine Fox
    Justine is the co-founder of Calzada Fox and an expert in colour research and development through applied colour psychology and trend.  She has 14 years’ experience of developing colour pathways with a diverse global client base, formed from industries specialising in accessories, art, branding, coatings, electronics, eyewear, flooring, food services, homeware and solid surfaces. Her input has seen clients increase their sales, attract media coverage and future-proof their design.
    Justine is a member of the Colour Group GB and is an advisory expert for the NCS Global Colour Trend Programme.
    Ideal if you’re interested in trends, the science of colour, colour research and applying psychology to trends.

    Carolina Calzada-Oiveira
    Carolina is the co-founder of Calzada Fox and an expert in colour marketing and strategies for creative businesses. She has worked in colour consultancy for the last 10 years as the Managing Director of Global Color Research and Colour Hive, a forecasting and trends organisation which produces publications such as Mix Magazine. Through her work, she has helped companies to implement colour strategy ideas into their product development process and marketing initiatives.
    Carolina is a member of the Society of British and International Design (SBID), where she is Chairman for Innovation at the Colour Council.  She also works with many prestigious universities and design associations.
    Ideal if you’re interested in trends, colour communication, marketing and creative agencies.

    Mika Nash

    Mika is a director of Insley & Nash and will share her unique experience designing, developing and producing bespoke printed textiles, and running a custom commissions textile business that produces work for couture catwalks through to exclusive interiors.
    Ideal if you’re interested in textile and fashion design, opening your own studio, developing bespoke commissions, screen printing and manufacturing in the UK.
