The lecture traces the life of a remarkable Victorian man from Halifax, David Smith. From humble beginnings through his early years as a dyer to the publication of his three books on Dyeing and beyond. He was at the crossroads of the appearance of Synthetic Dyes and the start of the demise of Natural Dyes. His books are full of recipes and samples he dyed himself. He was a “Superstar” dyer of his day and went on to great things, he was an inventor, founded a wool processing empire, built a church and was influential in the local council.
