Day of Celebration 2016

SDC’s annual Day of Celebration takes place on Friday 20th May 2016.

The day includes the AGM, awards ceremony, keynote speakers, President’s reception and celebration black-tie dinner.
Following the success of the last two years, we are returning to the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in the beautiful city of York.
The programme includes:
10.30 Registration opens
11.00 Annual General Meeting
13.00 Buffet lunch
14.00 Awards Ceremony – the award of the SDC’s medals and diplomas
Followed by keynote presentations including:
- Laduma Ngxokolo – South African knitwear designer and previous winner of the SDC International Design Competition
- Gavin Thatcher – Production Director, Standfast and Barracks
16.15 (approx) finish
18.30 President’s Reception
19.30 Celebration Dinner (black tie)
Earlier in the day the judging of the UK Final of the International Design Competition 2016 will also take place in York. The announcement of the winner, who will represent the UK at the Grand Final in November will be made after dinner.
What does it cost?
There is no charge for attending the daytime programme of events although booking is essential.
The cost for attending the evenings drinks reception and dinner is £54.00 (£45.00 plus VAT).
Live streaming of the AGM
Whilst we would love to see you in York, if you are unable to attend in person, we will be live streaming the AGM (from 11.00am to 1.00pm), enabling SDC members to access the event from around the world. York has a wide range of accommodation in and around the city. York’s official visitor information service is Visit York, which has links to accommodation and other information to help in planning your visit. We have previously used the following hotels:
Travelodge York Centre – a budget option. It is close to the Merchant Adventurers, although it is very basic!
Premier Inn Blossom Street North. A good value modern option, centrally located in York, although a little bit further from the Merchant Adventurers.
Here are some other options, although we haven’t used them. They all describe their location as ‘central York’, although some are about a 10-15 minute walk from the Merchant Adventurers Hall:
Churchill Hotel. This hotel has been recommended. Good location, about a ten minute walk from York Minster, in an historic building with lots of character.
Ibis York Centre. Describes itself as an ‘economy hotel’. Located close to the city walls.
Hotel Du Vin. About 10 minutes from the train station. Plenty of character, a bit more expensive but this hotel has also been recommended.
Hampton by Hilton. A modern option.
York is easily accessed by public transport and we would encourage you to take advantage of this.
By air – York is very easy to access from Manchester airport with frequent direct trains from the airport itself to York. Other airports are also easily accessible.
By train – there is an excellent and frequent train service to York. If you book your rail tickets online in advance then standard rail travel can be very inexpensive indeed.
By car – York is accessed from the A1/M1/M62 main links along the A64 in around 20 minutes. Parking – there are 13 city centre Council car parks (see http://www.york.gov.uk/info/200233/car_parks/324/car_parks ), 4 NCP Car Parks (see http://www.ncp.co.uk/find-a-car-park) plus other car parks (eg one either side of the railway station).
