Our Expert-led Colour Education Pathway offers opportunities to build experience and confidence in colour theory and practice. It’s directly informed by industry experts to combine theory and practice. From entry level learning to degree level qualifications, online bitesized micro learning to taught courses we have the expertise to guide you through your colour learning journey.

Our vision is to build a colour community of textile artists, designers, colour technologists and educators from all four corners of the globe where we can learn, discuss, share best practice and help you with your journey. We’re looking to the future, your future.

Qualifications

We have a set of internationally recognised professional coloration qualifications that extend to honours degree level. These are taught by experts and developed with industry.

In 1963 we were awarded our Royal Charter. This means that we are the only organisation in the world able to award Chartered Colourist (CCol) status – the pinnacle of achievement for coloration professionals.

  • Foundation Textile Coloration Certificate

    The Foundation Textile Coloration Certificate provides an introduction to the chemistry involved in textile coloration. Learners from diverse educational and experiential levels can take this course and begin to develop the knowledge behind dyeing and textiles.

    This 1 year introductory course will equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to embark on the TCC.

  • Textile Coloration Certificate

    The Textile Coloration Certificate reveals the fundamental processes and scientific principles behind the coloration of textiles. Learners from diverse educational and experiential levels can begin this course and leave with the knowledge and understanding to develop their dyeing skills.

    This 2 year course provides the perfect stepping stone to our UK Hons degree level (ASDC) by examination.

  • Associateship by examination

    The Associateship of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (ASDC) is the only professional qualification for colourists worldwide. Benchmarked by NARIC as equivalent to a UK Bachelor Honours Degree this course over 4 years will reveal the fundamental processes of the coloration of textiles. Gaining this qualification allows the student to apply to be a Chartered Colourist.

  • Associateship by exemption

    The ASDC by Exemption can be awarded to a candidate with a good UK honours degree or equivalent qualification with a strong coloration content by exemption. This requires the candidate to provide evidence of their previous qualifications and a number of years’ experience in a colour related occupation. Gaining this qualification allows the student to apply to be a Chartered Colourist.

  • Chartered Colourist

    Chartered Colourist status is a recognition of professional excellence.  This is coloration’s highest grade and recognises outstanding practical experience and expertise.  Being a Chartered Colourist is a sign of an up to date, experienced and qualified coloration professional and means you:

    • Enhance your professional status and career prospects
    • Stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace
    • Demonstrate your qualifications, experience, and current skills

    A range of benefits include:

    • Your name listed in our Chartered Colourist directory
    • Designation after your name (CCol)
  • Fellowship of the SDC

    Fellowship is awarded on application to those individuals who have demonstrated their distinction in the knowledge or practice of colour science or colour technology.

    Ideal for:

    • Those from the world of academia or industrial technology, whose contributions take the form of published papers
    • Those who can demonstrate outstanding performance or distinction in other areas of coloration 
    • Individuals holding senior positions in disciplines such as production or technical management, engineering or marketing
  • Colour Network

    Bite sized colour education. This online learning platform is a great way to explore new subjects and advance your knowledge. Our courses provide an introduction to the fundamental principles of colour, giving you the tools to develop and excel in your career. Suitable for design or technical roles.
